I had a few thoughts about chiropractic care that surfaced while I was dealing with pain from a stuck sacrum, and I wanted to share them with you. These reflections offer a deeper look into how spinal joints work, what happens when they don’t, and why chiropractic care is so essential.

The Problem With “Stuck” Joints

When a joint in the spine isn’t moving properly, what chiropractors often call a subluxation, it creates a ripple effect. The surrounding joints have to pick up the slack, which can strain nearby muscles, ligaments, and nerves. This often leads to irritation, pain, or inflammation in unexpected places.

At first, your body might compensate. The pain may lessen or even disappear for a while. But the underlying issue doesn’t go away. In fact, the longer it’s left unaddressed, the more it sets the stage for further injury and wear and tear.

How Chiropractic Care Helps

Chiropractic is the only approach that directly restores motion to stuck joints. When an adjustment is made to a joint that isn’t moving freely, it can bring immediate relief by releasing tension, increasing circulation and stimulating nerve impulses allowing for the whole system to function more optimally.

Each vertebra in your spine has two joints on each side that connect it to the vertebrae above and below. These joints form what are called joint complexes. If one side becomes stuck while the other continues to move, it creates an imbalance. Over time, this uneven pressure can cause the joint complex to deteriorate, sometimes leading to conditions like osteoarthritis.

And what about bone spurs? They’re the body’s response to chronic stress, bone tissue gets laid down in areas where tendons or ligaments are pulling unevenly. Regular chiropractic care helps prevent this process by keeping spinal joints aligned and moving the way they’re meant to.

You Might Not Even Feel It (At First)

What’s tricky is that we don’t always notice when a vertebra isn’t moving properly. The joints above and below often compensate, and the only sign may be a subtle sense of stiffness. Many people ignore this until it becomes more painful or starts to affect other areas of the body.

During a chiropractic exam, your doctor will assess the spine for movement, not just where you feel pain, but throughout the entire system. Often, the joint that’s causing the problem isn’t even the one you’re most aware of. And sometimes, oddly enough, the pain is stronger on the side that’s moving too much, not the side that’s stuck.

How Chiropractic Complements Other Therapies

I often see patients who’ve tried everything, massage, acupuncture, physical therapy, with limited results. When we finally address a stuck joint with an adjustment, suddenly those other treatments start to work better. That’s because each modality has its own unique view of what’s happening in the body, and they all work better when used together.

Chiropractic care isn’t about “fixing” everything on its own. It’s part of a bigger picture of healing, one that values movement, alignment, and collaboration between therapies.

Feeling stuck? Sometimes all it takes is the right adjustment to get everything else moving again.

Let us know if you have questions about your spinal health, or if you’re wondering whether chiropractic care might help you.
